FAQs

What are the benefits of Generali travel insurance?

Generali Global Assistance offers a variety of plans and add-on coverages to help protect your trip. Plans can help with a number of unexpected problems, including trip cancellations and interruptions; travel delays; lost, damaged and delayed baggage; and unexpected sickness, injury and medical evacuation. 24-Hour Emergency Services, Concierge and ID Theft Resolution services are also included. These services round out Generali travel protection plans to provide real-time assistance when you need it on your trip.

In addition to providing added peace of mind, Generali plans can also help international travelers satisfy passport insurance requirements. Depending upon your country of residence and where you’re traveling to, you may be required to possess passport insurance for emergency hospital treatment and emergency medical evacuation before you’re permitted to enter your destination country or receive your visa.

When is the best time to get travel insurance?

We suggest you buy a travel insurance plan when you make your first trip payment, like airfare or a cruise. That way you have a long coverage period in case you need to cancel your trip. Later on, you can add coverage to the same plan for your hotel, tours and other pre-paid, non-refundable trip costs.

What can I insure?

You may insure pre-paid, non-refundable trip costs. Non-refundable, pre-paid trip costs are costs associated with your insured trip that you wouldn't recoup if you cancel the trip and are paid before you leave on your trip. Take into account flights, cruises, accommodations, tours, entertainment and other trip costs that could be lost if you're prevented from taking your trip.

Can I add coverage to my plan after I purchase it?

Yes. If you purchase additional arrangements such as lodging, rental car, a round of golf or show tickets prior to your departure date, you can purchase additional coverage to insure those arrangements.

How many people can be covered by one travel insurance plan?

Up to 10 travelers can be insured under one plan (they must be listed on the plan to be covered).

What is a covered event?

Insurance plans cannot cover all events that might happen to you. Those events which are covered are listed in your Description of Coverage or Policy.

What are some of the covered events?

Some examples of covered reasons for Trip Cancellation or Trip Interruption include sickness, injury or death of you, a family member or traveling companion; flight cancellations and delays due to adverse weather or mechanical breakdown of the aircraft; mandatory evacuation at your destination; jury duty; school year extensions; your home made uninhabitable by hurricane or other natural disaster; a documented traffic accident en route to your destination; involuntary termination of employment; acts of terrorism; and more. Additional terms and conditions apply, review a sample Description of Coverage/Policy for full details.

Can I still buy insurance coverage for a pending storm?

For plans that offer coverage for adverse weather and natural disasters, if the plan is purchased after a storm is named, coverage is typically not provided for losses resulting from that named storm.

What is a foreseeable event?

Foreseeable simply means reasonably known beforehand. Once it is reasonable that people traveling to an area would know about an event, it becomes foreseeable. For example, if employees of the airline you are flying announce that they are going on strike, the event becomes foreseeable once they make the announcement.

If I buy the plan today, when does coverage begin?

Trip Cancellation coverage begins at 12:01 A.M. on the day after the date the plan payment is received. All other coverages begin when you depart on your covered trip.

Who is considered as a family member?

  • Traveling Companion(s)
  • Insured’s or Traveling Companion’s Spouse
  • Insured’s, Traveling Companion’s or Spouse’s: child; parent; sibling; grandparent, great-grandparent, grandchild or greatgrandchild; step-parent, step-child or step-sibling; son-in-law or daughter-in-law; brother in-law or sister-in-law; aunt or uncle; niece or nephew; legal guardian; foster child or legal ward.

Can I be covered for a Pre-Existing Medical Condition?

If you purchase the Generali Premium plan you can qualify for coverage for pre-existing medical conditions, as long as the travel protection plan is purchased prior to or within 24 hours of your final trip payment, you are medically able to travel at the time the plan is purchased, and all prepaid trip costs that are subject to cancellation penalties or restrictions have been insured (state exceptions apply).

What is a Pre-Existing Medical Condition?

A pre-existing medical condition means a sickness or injury during the 180-day period immediately prior to your effective date for which you or your traveling companion:

  1. Received, or received a recommendation for, a diagnostic test, examination or medical treatment, or
  2. Took or received a prescription for drugs or medicine.

Item 2 of this definition does not apply to a condition that is treated or controlled solely through the taking of prescription drugs or medicine, and remains treated or controlled without any adjustment or change in the required prescription throughout the 180-day period before coverage is effective under the insurance plan.

See the plan Description of Coverage or Policy for more details.

What does "final payment" mean?

"Final payment" is the last pre-paid payment (prior to departure) of the most expensive part of the trip, unless the main air arrangements are added last. "Main air arrangements" refer to air to/from the main destination, compared to tickets for a side trip during the vacation.
